The planned community of Reston has attracted national and worldwide recognition and awards. It was orginally conceived by Robert E. Simon; Reston was founded on Simon's 50th birthday and named for his initials. Reston has been designated a backyard wildlife habitat community, a designation usually reserved for individual homes. The Reston Association is responsible for the design, use and maintenance of covenants for most properties in Reston; it also manages the maintenance of 1,350 acres of open space and provides recreational and educational activities for all ages. Reston's proximity to Dulles International Airport and Dulles Toll Road has attracted a number of major high-technology firms providing a broad employment base.
As of November 9, 2009, there were 337 active listings in Reston. During the month of October, 2009, there were 102 closed residential sales (up from 85 sales in September), 133 new listings and 108 new pending sales. The average sales price was $384,084 (down from $427,959 in September); the median sales price was $315,000 (down from $380,000 in September); the average number of days on market was 50 (up from 49 in September).
