Sterling is located in eastern Loudoun County and is considered part of the Washington DC Metropolitan area. The northernmost part of Sterling (zip code 20165) is also known as Potomac Falls; it lies along the Potomac River and includes the neighborhoods of Cascades and Lowes Island, an upscale golf course community. The 20164 zip code includes the areas known as Sterling Park (built in the mid-1960s) and Sugarland Run (built in the 1970s). The comedian Patton Oswalt grew up in Sterling and often talks about it in his stand-up act. Very convenient to Dulles International Airport and major technology firms.
As of November 9, 2009, there were 426 active listings in Sterling. During the month of October, 2009, there were 121 closed residential sales (down from 132 sales in September), 138 new listings and 149 new pending sales.
